A Word About Medicare

Recently there has been news articles about Medicare covering acupuncture. While this is good news there are strict limitations. Mainly:

1). Medicare does not cover acupuncture (including dry needling*) for any condition other than chronic low back pain.

2). For Medicare to cover Acupuncture it must be given by a doctor, or by another health care provider (like a nurse practitioner or physician assistant) who has both of these:

a). A masters or doctoral level degree in acupuncture or Oriental Medicine from a school accredited by the  Accreditation Commission on Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine
b). A current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice acupuncture in the state where care is being provided.

It should be noted that there are very few physicians in the entire state of California who hold these qualifications which makes getting Medicare to cover acupuncture almost impossible.

Don't let lack of Medicare coverage stop you from getting treated. Most people will find that acupuncture treatments are within their budgets. If you are interested in acupuncture treatments please call to find out more about costs (530) 223-2346.

*"Dry Needling", a therapy that uses acupuncture needles, is illegal in California. Any health care practitioner, other than a licensed acupuncturist or an M.D., is practicing illegally if they insert acupuncture needles or "dry needles" in your body and should be reported to the Medical Board of California.
